You can find millions of much-needed elevators in the city of the Seven Hills. But there is one special lift in the Chiado & Baixa district, that won’t just bring you two floors up to your flat.

Situated at the end of Rua de Santa Justa, the Santa Justa Lift is one of the greatest examples of Portuguese architecture, and a landmark of the city. The lift was designed by Raul Mesnier de Ponsard in 1902, a Portuguese apprentice of Gustave Eiffel – yes, the one who built the Eiffel Tower. The elevator was originally built to connect the lower streets of the Baixa with the higher Largo do Carmo. The iron tower is fabulous from outside; it is completely decorated in neogothic style, with each story having a different pattern. The elevator is huge, with lots of wood in its interior and kind of victorian, which alone would be worth a visit.

But the true treat awaits you when you exit the elevator: you get to experience a unbelievable panoramic view of the most beautiful part of the city. The 45 meter tall iron lift offers you spectacular views of the Lisbon Castle, the Baixa neighbourhood and the Rossio Square.

Once you’re on top, you can also enjoy a (slightly overpriced) coffee and pastry at the café from which you can overlook the center of Lisbon and the Tagus River.

Tip: when getting tired of the view (if that will ever happen), leave the elevator through the upper exit, which goes right to the Carmo Archaeological Museum!
