Italy: Tartufi Truffles (tartufi-fried eggs)

It you visit Italy during the autumn truffle season its essential that you taste the uova con tartufi-fried eggs. Normally eaten for Sunday brunch, the dish is finished with a tasty drizzle of truffle oil. This delicacy is rarely found on the menu of restaurants in tourist hotspots, although if you ask for this renowned snack the waiting staff will understand your request and ask the chef to conjure up the secret appetizer. Tuscany and Umbria chefs are usually responsible for delivering this mouth-watering dish so head to this type of restaurant when you’re hunting down the tartufi truffle. Why not try making it yourself; it takes approximately five minuets to create this avant-garde treat. c2bcf2f3175df9d24adffeb0e46cc4cbA quintessentially British activity, the pub quiz has been popular for over 40 years in the UK; with more than 22.000 of them being held regularly every week! What better way to spend an ordinary weeknight than in the midst of a pub full of enthusiasm at the thought of winning a bottle of wine or a bit of money?

Ye Old Crow is a charming little pub that claims to have been built in 1854, so it boasts plenty of history, despite having undergone a 21st century makeover, which includes twinkling chandeliers, wooden floors, and – best of all! – a free jukebox! It has an intimate, cozy atmosphere; ideal to enjoy the live Jazz music that takes place every other Thursday.

On the last Monday of every month, the place to be is at a table, with a pint of beer and surrounded by friends, about to start the pub quiz! Stroll down to get seats early, make teams, decide what you’ll be called and prepare your pencils and quiz papers. The person asking the questions is known as the quizmaster and will be the same person that marks the team’s answers and announces the winner.

And what will the questions be about, you ask; well, usually there’s a general knowledge round, which covers history, geography and science and nature; a sports and entertainment round, and true or false questions. Some quiz’s also play “Who am I?”, a round in which the quizmaster reads out the clues to the identity of a famous person; or a music round, when excerpts of a song sound and the team has to guess the band and the song. Finally the prizes are given out, awarded to the team with the highest score. Normally, they are a case of beer or money to spend on drinks, vouchers to go to the cinema or novelty gifts like chocolate or cheap toys.

It’s all about gathering a group of like-minded friends and a couple of pitchers and spending a perfectly blissful Monday night (and discovering previously unknown penchants for 80’s music or geography).

Be there at 7:30pm, and have the time of your life for just 1 pound entry!

osthafenFriedrichshain is a hip district in the eastern part of Germany’s capital, which is full of unique shops and restaurants. Historically, Friedrichshain went through many changes throughout its existence. In the twenties and thirties of the 20th century it was the center of the communist and socialist movement in Berlin. After the Nazis came to power, this was the city part with the most conflicts between the residents and the SA, which is why a big part of the district was destroyed during the Second World War.

In the times of Eastern Germany, Friedrichshain was home to the industrial and trade workers, which is why the famous “Osthafen” and “Ostbahnhof” were built, which can still be found there today. Therefore, it is no surprise that the revolt of the 17th of June 1953 in the German Democratic Republic started in exactly this area.

Today, Friedrichshain is famous for its little shops that can not be found anywhere else and its numerous restaurants and cafes with more than reasonable prices and fabulous food. Usually drawing a young and alternative crowd, Friedrichshain is a lively area in the former Eastern Germany that has many surprises in store for you.

If you feel like taking a vintage picture in an unpredictable photo machine, finding a t-shirt that no one will wear except for you, or enjoying a cheap but delicious Sunday brunch on a sunny terrace, Friedrichshain is the place to go. Especially in the Simon-Dach-Straße are many of the best places.
