c2bcf2f3175df9d24adffeb0e46cc4cbA quintessentially British activity, the pub quiz has been popular for over 40 years in the UK; with more than 22.000 of them being held regularly every week! What better way to spend an ordinary weeknight than in the midst of a pub full of enthusiasm at the thought of winning a bottle of wine or a bit of money?

Ye Old Crow is a charming little pub that claims to have been built in 1854, so it boasts plenty of history, despite having undergone a 21st century makeover, which includes twinkling chandeliers, wooden floors, and – best of all! – a free jukebox! It has an intimate, cozy atmosphere; ideal to enjoy the live Jazz music that takes place every other Thursday.

On the last Monday of every month, the place to be is at a table, with a pint of beer and surrounded by friends, about to start the pub quiz! Stroll down to get seats early, make teams, decide what you’ll be called and prepare your pencils and quiz papers. The person asking the questions is known as the quizmaster and will be the same person that marks the team’s answers and announces the winner.

And what will the questions be about, you ask; well, usually there’s a general knowledge round, which covers history, geography and science and nature; a sports and entertainment round, and true or false questions. Some quiz’s also play “Who am I?”, a round in which the quizmaster reads out the clues to the identity of a famous person; or a music round, when excerpts of a song sound and the team has to guess the band and the song. Finally the prizes are given out, awarded to the team with the highest score. Normally, they are a case of beer or money to spend on drinks, vouchers to go to the cinema or novelty gifts like chocolate or cheap toys.

It’s all about gathering a group of like-minded friends and a couple of pitchers and spending a perfectly blissful Monday night (and discovering previously unknown penchants for 80’s music or geography).

Be there at 7:30pm, and have the time of your life for just 1 pound entry!

Maybe the latest Sherlock Holmes movie reminded you of the grandeur that is Sherlock Holmes and his famous sidekick Doctor Watson, or maybe you have been a life long die-hard fan. Whatever the case; if you are interested in the fictional characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, you should not miss the chance to visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum in London. The museum is situated in the exact address of the characters’ fictional apartment where they are reported to have resided between 1881 and 1904: the famous 221b Baker Street in London. On the north end of Baker Street, between Marlebone & Park Road, and close to Regent’s Park, the 1815 Georgian town house was formerly used as a boarding house but was transformed into the museum in 1990. Dedicated to the life and times of the famous detectives, the interior has been furnished exactly as described in the published stories. The apartment of Holmes lies on the first floor and comprises two rooms that can be viewed. Very true to the fiction, here, you can sit in Holmes’ armchair, explore some of his scientific experiments and imagine the detective smoking on his pipe right next to you. Everything you remember from the stories is right there: the actual notebook, the violin, his pipe and different disguises and more, all of which belonged to none other than Sherlock Holmes himself. An exhibition area, which features amusing life-size wax figures from the best known Sherlock Holmes adventures, friends and enemies alike, can be found on the second and third floor. Throughout the Victorian rooms in the 3 floors of exhibits and displays you can explore the life and stories of the legendary detective, read letters written to Holmes, take fun photos at the door with “the” hat and even dress up as Holmes himself! It is also kind of like a big quiz for Holmes fans: you can try to guess what article or “memorabilia” comes from which story.

For Holmes addicts and fans of Arthur Conan Doyle’s dynamic duo, this museum is a must. The apartment itself is worth a visit due to its Victorian era feel, but the point is that you can really stand in the fictional house of a fictional character, and not just any made up person: we are talking about the legendary detective Holmes! Also, there is a great souvenir and antique shop on the ground floor where you can find books, clothing, collectibles and more. This is a great way to spend some time and get to know Sherlock Holmes and his always faithful partner Doctor Watson. Or as he would say: “Elementary, my dear Watson”.
