If Ibiza were to be given a star sign it would be Gemini: the twin, the zodiac with the double sign. The duality ascribed to a Geminean is very much apparent in Ibiza: on one hand the crazy 24/7 party crowd, on the other the beautiful natural scenery.

During Franco’s fascist rule of the mainland, the island became the refuge and home of many artists and political liberals trying to escape the dictatorship; but it was in the 60’s when Ibiza was crowned queen of the hippy scene, with people such as Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell moving there to enjoy its tiny deserted coves and citrus groves. This quieter, more romantic side to Ibiza is made up pine forests, dusky olive trees, sand dunes, hidden little villages and windmills. For over 100 years these charismatic buildings brought water from the depths of Ibiza’s soil to give life to its people.

One of the best preserved of these is in Cala Jondal, and offers a tour to however wants to get to know the village side of Ibiza and understand its history. The sails of these pretty windmills are white and blue, to represent Ibiza’s colours: the white of the island and its sandy beaches, and the blue of the sea and sky surrounding it – although the old ibizencos believe that the blue wards off the evil spirits. This colour scheme can be found in most villas and houses on the island, giving Ibiza its own unique and characteristic style.

Recapture the essence of free love and free thinking of the 60’s hippies by wandering around the countryside of Ibiza’s peaceful side.
