In Sardinia, one of the most popular visitor excursions in the town of Alghero is a tour of the Grotta di Nettuno – and rightfully so! The Neptune’s Grotto (named after the Roman god of the sea, Neptune) was discovered by fishermen in the 18th century and is stalactite cave with stunning stalactites and stalagmites. Through dramatic lighting these can be seen in impressive shapes like cathedral columns or organ pipes, which give the individual caves their name.

The entrance to the Grotta is only around a meter above the sea level at the foot of the Cap Caccia cliffs, so the grotto can only be visited when the waters are calm. There are two ways to enter the cave. You can either take the 654-step stairway that is cut into the cliff if you are up for a physical challenge. This walkway is an adventure itself and enables you to have a great view over the ocean.
The Grotta is also accessible by boats, which leave at the Alghero port. With the boat trip you can look at the spectacular vertical cliffs of Cap Caccia and the tranquil blue bay of Porte Conte. What not many know is that underwater there are even more popular caves for scuba-divers. The most famous and biggest of them is Nereo Cave which is a paradise for scuba-enthusiasts.

The Neptune’s Grotto is about 4 kilometers long but only a couple of hundred meters can be seen by the visitors. The lit stalactite and stalagmite formations, the 120-meter-long saltwater lake and the developed columns in such a wide-open space gives you an incredible view. The natural beauty of the grotto will awe you and make the Grotta di Nettuno your most vivid memory of Sardinia.
