When the SoHo neighborhood in Manhattan rose to fame in the 60s and 70s it triggered the emergance of similar trendy and hip neighborhoods worldwide – one of these can be found in Sweden´s capital of Stockholm. Stockholm´s neighborhood of SoFo is located South of Folkungagatan – one of the main streets in Stockholm´s fashionable Sodermalm district. Being one of the poorest neighborhoods in Stockholm fifty years ago, Sodermalm has transformed into the “place to be seen” as many artists and writers moved to the district several decades ago. This helped create the relaxed and layed back atmosphere that Sodermalm enjoys today, making it an attractive area for students and younger generations.

Strolling around the streets of SoFo, you will be delighted by the wide variety of restaurants, bars, cafes and art gallaries where hip artists and fashionistas sip their soy lattes. SoFo is also home to many Swedish fashion and jewellery designers such as Efva Attling, whose creative and elegant jewellery designs can be found in her store on Hornsgatan. For those of you that are on a budget, SoFo offers an overwhelming variety of second hand stores such as Beyond Retro, Myrorna and Stockholms Stadsmission.

Walking west down Hornsgatan from Slussen metro station, you will come across Hornsgatspuckeln which is home to a series of art galleries and the cultural center of Stockholm. SoFo´s hip inhabitants gather here for the openings of new galleries and feast their eyes apon the latest creations of popular artists. If you are a fan of the theater and cinema, check out whats on at Gota Lejon theater on Gotgatan or catch a movie at Filmstaden Soder cinema on Medborgarplatsen. Even though most plays are performed in Swedish, all movies are shown in their orginal versions so theres no need to worry about them being dubbed! After you are done exploring rest your feet in one of SoFo´s stylish cafes such as Muggen – famous for making the best cup of coffee in town.

Like it´s cousin neighborhood in New York, SoFo offers something interesting for everyone – from shopping for unique vintage clothing to checking out an exhibition in an art gallery. So venture out and discover the streets of Stockholm´s trendiest neighborhood, where you are bound to find something exciting just around the corner! This is why we offer you our uber-stylish apartments in Stockholm; come check them out!

Shopping in Stockholm

If you think Sweden’s only shopping attraction is Ikea, you are in for a big surprise. The city of Stockholm is known as a leading design center in both the traditional and contemporary scene, so a shopping trip in Stockholm can be as diverse as one in New York City. When visiting the Swedish capital you should not miss the chance to go splurge a little; the number of boutiques, department stores, designer stores, but also second-hand shops or flea markets in this city is unbelievable. And after all, an extensive shopping trip will take you to some of the most beautiful places in the whole city. Stockholm, looking at it out of a shopping point-of-view can be divided into three main parts: downtown, Södermalm and Östermalm.

If the downtown part had to be described in a phrase, it would be “affordable trendy fashion for today’s youth”. Just a couple of minutes by foot from the main train station, close to Sergels Torg and Drottninggatan you will find an abundance of main-stream but also Swedish clothing chains. This is the area the classic large-scale Stockholm department stores call home. There is for example Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in the Hamngatan, which houses numerous renowned and exclusive Swedish and international fashion labels and one part just for glass and craftworks. Speaking of department stores, if you head over to where Drottninggatan ends at Sergels Torg you will find what is the largest department store in Sweden: Åhléns City, which, for department-store-fanatics is an absolute must. In general, the pedestrian streets in the downtown area are lined with many different clothing chains, cafés and restaurants – a shopper’s paradise.

Next stop: Södermalm. This area is completely different from the downtown area when it comes to shopping. Here you will find little boutiques with unusual and interesting things not only for fashion, but also for vintage articles, interior décor and many other unexpected things. Trendy, young, bohemian and unique are all words that fit perfectly to the Södermalm shopping area. It is a diverse scene for the unexpected and new, while at the same time offering top of the class vintage merchandise. If you are up to date in fashion, you might be looking for some of these unique items that are written about in all the fashion magazines, and in Södermalm, the chances of you finding something extraordinary are the best. But not only boutiques make this area so unique. Art galleries, handicraft stores, renowned jewelry designer stores and a cluster of vintage clothing stores and budget savers are all to be found in this area.

If bargain and vintage clothing is not your thing, and you are, in fact, looking for exactly the opposite, head over to Östermalm. This is the most exclusive district in the Swedish capital. High-class Scandinavian design labels for décor and fashion mingle with exclusive international labels and other first-class fashion stores. Biblioteksgatan houses the flagship stores of labels like Filippa K and Armani and numerous other stores for the latest in international fashion.

As you can see, a good shopping trip in these three parts of Stockholm is sure to make everyone happy: bargain hunters, latest-fashion-fanatics, or exclusive design lovers – there is something for every type of shopper out there.
